A little over two months ago, a buddy and old writing partner of mine, Scott Walker, called me up with an interesting proposition — how would I like to join him in writing a feature length comedy– Sorry, how would I like to join him in writing a feature length comedy… and get PAID for it?
I don’t even think I hesitated, “Yes!” spilled right out of my mouth.
So I started giving more thought to the Team Bad Ass idea from my last post… as a former and favorite boss of mine used to say, “it’s got legs.”
So I called Gino Calabro last night to bat around the idea for a bit. Gino’s a great local actor – one of Phoenix’s best, and also my good friend. He asked me some fairly tough questions about the TBA idea… you know, like, “What’s it about?” and “What does the team actually do?”
Geez, Gino, like I’m supposed to have ALL the answers. Hahaha…
I have notebooks. Piles upon piles of notebooks. Some completely filled, most only partially filled… with Movie Ideas. Big and small. Short and tall. Good, bad and ugly. It’s all in my notebooks. Comedies, dramas, mysteries and science fiction. I also have a whiteboard:
So there we were… secreted away in a black car; its windows darkly tinted; its passengers engaged in a clandestine operation to capture audio that had failed so many times before…
“Previously… on Road Less Traveled…”
“Hmm… Can you try it slower and with less emotion?”
“PREVIOUSLY. ON. ROAD. LESS. TRAVELED.”
(laughing) “Not like a ROBOT!”
Anyone who knows me knows I love movies. Especially Comedies. And Action movies. And of course, the apex of film making; the best of both worlds: the Action/Comedy.
So… is it shocking that I really didn’t enjoy The Road or Mutant Chronicles? Probably not. But I wanted to like both of them.
